The definition of lake is “ body of water lying in the depressed ground without direct communication with the sea.” This definition has two essences, one is closed or half-closed inland wash, one is collection of water body in wash. Lake is a natural syntheses composing of lake basin, lake water, and also substance contained in the water—minerals, solutes, organic matter and aquatic organisms. (See “China Lake Records”). China has a vast territory and lots of lakes. From eastern plain near the sea to western plateau in China, whatever wet or dry territory, there is distribution of natural lakes.
China Lake Database, which is an important part of Resources and Environment Scientific Database, collects major lake’s data of China. Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology, Chinese Academy of Science, which united fraternal universities and institutes, set up the China Lake Database based on accumulative data that come from long time research of many lakes in China. The database is aimed at understand lake, protect lake, research lake and service environment and the economic development of lake region.
